B.A. in History, Hendrix College, Conway AR - 1974
M.S. in Plant Pathology, University of Arkansas - 1978
Ph.D. in Plant Pathology, University of California at Davis - 1983
Areas of Specialization/Research
Pathogens and diseases affecting sugarcane, all aspects of disease management, conventional and molecular selection for host plant resistance, Pythium, and changes in soil microbial communities associated with sugarcane monoculture. Cooperative extension effort (25%) for sugarcane pathology educational programs.
Project LAB94515 Sugarcane Pathology Research
- To increase understanding of the biology of sugarcane diseases and improve management practices to minimize losses
- To evaluate resistance to diseases as part of the sugarcane variety development program
- To evaluate management practices for stalk rot and improve the reliability of billet planting
- To minimize the impact of systemic diseases through support for certified seedcane programs and infection monitoring
I have a commodity-based pathology research program and enjoy conducting applied and basic research on a variety of pathogens and diseases affecting sugarcane. The disease problems affecting sugarcane in Louisiana have dictated my research program priorities. Sugarcane is an important commodity in Louisiana with an estimated economic impact of $2.7 billion. It is produced on approximately 450,000 acres by 475 mostly "Cajun" family farming operations. Sugarcane has been commercially cultivated in south Louisiana for more than 200 years. It is a great pleasure to conduct pathology research in support of this important, traditional industry.
Teaching Experience
PLHL 7083 - Epidemiology and Crop Loss Assessment, 3 hour lecture course.
This course introduces graduate students to basic concepts of interactions between pathogen and host populations and the environment, the description and prediction of disease increase in time and space, implications for disease management, and techniques to assess losses to plant diseases.
