FAQ for Student Employment
Can a student employee work remotely?
Student employees, including Graduate Assistants, may be approved to work remotely. Student employees who typically perform tasks that don’t lend themselves to remote work may, by mutual agreement, be assigned work that can be accomplished remotely.
Who can approve remote work for student employees?
Directors and Department Chairs may approve remote work for student employees in their respective units.
What documentation is required for hourly paid student employees to work remotely?
- An email to the student employee stating the approval to work remotely, hours permitted, and scope of work to be accomplished; AND,

- The recording of time in Workday on a daily basis; AND,
- No less than weekly summaries of work performed emailed to the supervisor.

What IT issues need to be addressed before student employees work remotely?
Student employees, including Graduate Assistants, should perform work using a university-provided device if at all possible. If students must use a personal device to perform work remotely, and that work involves the handling of sensitive information, the student must utilize a virtual private network (VPN) and must not store files on a local (privately-owned) device. Managers and student employees shall handle information in accordance with LSU Policy Statement 6.20 – Security of Data.
Can I continue to work on campus?
Check with you supervisor directly to determine if you are allowed to work on campus, how your schedule or work function may be impacted by covid19 related safety measures.
Can I work my student worker job remotely?
Directors and Department Chairs are able to make decision about the ability of individual student employees to work remotely based on the scope of duties that can be accomplished virtually. Discuss your interest in working remotely with your direct supervisor.
Can I work more than 20 hours per week now that I have more flexibility due to online classes?
No, university policy limits student employees to 20 hours per week of work. Your supervisor may request an exception for work up to 25 hours per week by completing this form. An approval from the Student Employment Coordinator must be received before the extra hours can be worked.
Will I still get my FWS/PSA scholarship if I choose not to work?
You should work with your supervisor directly on the feasibility of working remotely. Student employees will only be paid for hours worked.
