Templates for Emailing Supervisors Regarding Work Status
As LSU continues to monitor the coronavirus pandemic, remote work is encouraged for internship, co-op, and job experiences for Spring and Summer 2020. See Internship, Co-op, and Job Guidance for Spring and Summer 2020 and the email templates below in support of this recommendation.
If you have a confirmed summer work opportunity, but haven't yet heard from your employer regarding status while social-distancing orders are in place, reach out to your supervisor or HR contact.
Consider the following communication:
Dear Mr/Ms Brown,
First and foremost I hope that you and your family are doing well during this difficult and stressful situation. I am emailing to inquire about the status of my upcoming internship start date of May 25th with Dallas currently under a stay-at-home order from the Governor. Has “Company Name” had any discussions about the internship program or the scheduled start date changing due to the current situation?
If the stay-at-home order has not been lifted by the middle of May, are there opportunities to start my internship remotely and work on projects from Baton Rouge? I am very excited about the opportunity to join your team in May and I look forward to hearing back from you about the status of my internship.
Sincerely,
Mike Tiger
If you learn that the position has been canceled, consider the following communication for inquiring about remote work options, and, for credit-bearing internships, view Internship, Co-op, and Job Guidance for Spring and Summer 2020:
Dear Mr/Ms Brown,
Thank you for updating me on the internship program being canceled for the upcoming summer. As excited as I was about working at “Company Name’s” facility in Dallas, it is both unfortunate and understandable that “Company Name” has had to cancel its in-person internship.
Are there opportunities to work from Baton Rouge remotely on projects? The internship would not be the same as being there in-person and I know that this is a bit unorthodox, but I believe I could be of value to the organization even working from home.
I would love to discuss some ideas of ways I could be of benefit to “Company Name” from Baton Rouge.
Sincerely,
Mike Tiger
If you determine that you need to withdraw due to personal safety related factors surrounding COVID-19, consider the following communication, and, for credit-bearing internships, view Internship, Co-op, and Job Guidance for Spring and Summer 2020:
Dear Mr/Ms Brown,
First and foremost I hope that you and your family are doing well during this difficult and stressful situation.
Due to the current health crisis the US is facing, I feel it is necessary to respectfully withdraw myself from the internship opportunity I had committed to start in May.
I understand the ramifications this causes “Company Name”, but with the inability to work this position remotely I believe it is in my best interest to remain in Baton Rouge and not subject myself to moving to Dallas in three weeks.
Please accept my professional apologies as I have not taken this decision lightly and while I understand if I am not able to be considered for future employment, I do want to reiterate how much I respect “Company Name” and would be interested in an opportunity in the future.
Sincerely,
Mike Tiger
