Visiting international fellows and students visit
Hola Nola Foods, Geismar, LA

Hola Nola VisitDr. Subramaniam Sathivel (the School of Nutrition and Food Sciences and the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering), LSU AgCenter International visiting fellows, and students from Dr. Sathivel’ lab visited Hola Nola Foods’ modern tortilla plant in Geismar, LA on February 27, 2014.

The company is Louisiana’s only tortilla manufacturer and makes tortillas that are authentic and similar to hand pressed tortillas. The company, with a staff of 10 employees, is serving local grocers and restaurants. The Hola Nola Foods provided an exciting and informative tour to Dr. Sathivel’s group.

The group had the opportunity to see the entire processing line from raw materials to finished products including flour preparation, dough making, pressing, drying, and sorting equipment and packaging of tortillas. The company provided refreshments and gifts including t-shirts and tortillas.

Hola Nola visitThe students and the international fellows told Dr. Sathivel that they had a great time and they were interested to see more about Hola Nola’s modern tortilla plant. The company is planning to provide internships to the School of Nutrition and Food Sciences students and to use the Food Engineering lab to study matters related to tortilla production. Dr. Sathivel takes this opportunity to thank Mr. Rod Olson and Mr. Kevin Holden, founders of the company, and supporting staff including Mr. David Cabello and Ms. Kim Rasch for providing the wonderful educational tour and for their kind hospitality.
