Registration of Biological and Recombinant DNA Research
All biological research at LSU/LSU AgCenter is to be conducted using accepted biological safety practices and in full compliance with university policies and all applicable federal rules and regulations relating to such activities. Accordingly, all projects involving any biological material, recombinant DNA, pathogens of humans, livestock animals, plants, and biological toxins must be registered and reviewed by the IBRDSC and/or LSUAC-IBC. Recombinant DNA is defined as the joining of natural or synthetic DNA segments to DNA molecules that can replicate in a living cell. Recombinant DNA research is the use of recombinant DNA for any purpose, including transgenic plants and animals. Some projects are exempt from NIH guidelines, however they are not exempt from appropriate biosafety practices.
The recombinant DNA, pathogen and toxin oversight activities will be conducted according to the most recent editions of the CDC/NIH publications NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules and Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories.
The Registration Document is now electronic. After clicking on the link below, you must enter your LSU or LSU AgCenter username & password to enter the document. The same document is used for registration with the Inter-Institutional Biological Recombinant DNA Safety Committee (IBRDSC) and the LSU AgCenter’s Institutional Biosafety Committee(LSUAC-IBC). The electronic form will direct you to the appropriate committee by how you answer the questions. You must fully complete each question to move to the next screen. If you have problems or questions, please contact:

Inter-Institutional Biological Recombinant DNA Safety Committee (IBRDSC) Meeting
Meetings are open to the public.
Research materials shipped domestically and internationally are subject to a number of Federal, State and Local regulations. Individuals wishing to import or export any biological material (infectious or non-infectious), including but not limited to recombinant organisms, should contact Quinesha Morgan, Assistant Director of Research Safety at qperry2@lsu.edu.
In some cases, permits may be required for the import, transfer, or export of biological material(s). Although LSU EHS does not issue permits, the office will provide guidance on how to obtain these permits. Contact Quinesha Morgan, Assistant Director of Research Safety at qperry2@lsu.edu for more information.
For studies where animals will be housed by the Department of Lab Animal Medicine (DLAM) (LSU Vet School) infected with pathogens or the introduction of recombinant DNA into animals, you must also print and complete the DLAM Hazard Warning Posting and send to:
Quinesha P. Morgan, PhD,
Assistant Director Research Safety
214 Administrative Support Building, LSU Campus
Phone: 225-578-4235
Email: qperry2@lsu.edu.
The DLAM Hazard Warning is also a requirement of the LSU Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and must be signed by the Assistant Director of Research Safety.
