Jessica A. Aslin of LSU University College’s Center for Advising & Counseling Receives National Advising Honor

Jessica AslinBATON ROUGE – Jessica A. Aslin, counselor for LSU University College’s Center for Advising & Counseling, has been selected as an Outstanding Advising Award Winner from the National Academic Advising Association, or NACADA. This national honor follows Aslin’s recent decoration as LSU’s 2017 Advisor of the Year. Aslin will head to St. Louis, Mo., in October to be recognized at the highest level for academic advising.

“I am very excited and humbled to receive this esteemed award,” said Aslin. “I really enjoy advising LSU students and helping them to connect their academic achievements to their career goals. Advising is a rewarding career, and serving students in their college journey is what I love to do each day.”

The award is presented to individuals who have demonstrated qualities associated with outstanding academic advising of students or outstanding academic advising administration, whose primary role at the institution is the direct delivery of advising services to students. Aslin was selected from a competitive pool of national and international candidates.

Aslin is LSU’s seventh consecutive National Academic Advising Association award winner.

Aslin joins other award-winning counselors and advisors from LSU that have received this prestigious national honor, including Stephanie Erie in 2016, Bridget Robicheaux in 2015, Robbie S. Bowen and Ashley Granger in 2014, Andrea L. Jones in 2013, Annette L. Yancy in 2012, Joyce Wakefield in 2009, Rachel L. Singleton in 2008 and Tim Fields in 2007.

“It is significant that Ms. Aslin is being recognized as an outstanding academic advisor by the National Academic Advising Association,” said R. Paul Ivey, executive director of LSU University College. “This professional organization is recognized as the premier global association for the development and dissemination of innovative theory, research and practice of academic advising in higher education.”

Andrea Jones, assistant director for LSU University College, Center for Advising and Counseling, nominated Aslin, noting her as “innovative, knowledgeable, and an amazing advisor … Jessica has approximately 2,000 student contacts each year. One of the things that is so special about Jessica is she gives her undivided attention to each of the many students who walk through her door.”

Aslin’s interactions with LSU students can best be described with the following comments:

She is helping me stay on track and continuing to encourage me to better myself. Without her, there would be a lot of unanswered questions on my end. “Jessica’s contributions extend beyond her work at LSU as she was recently recognized by the Louisiana Counseling Association for her outstanding contribution to LCA in her role as President of the Louisiana College Counseling Association,” said Lisa Hubner, director of Baton Rouge Community College Career Center and president of the Louisiana Career Development Association. “Jessica’s leadership in planning and executing the LCCA Conference resulted in record turnout and offered a cost-effective opportunity for college counselors to network, grow professionally and update their skills. She is a dependable and capable leader.”

Aslin is a national certified counselor and licensed professional counselor with a Master of Education, concentration in guidance counseling from LSU and a Bachelor of General Studies from Southeastern Louisiana University. She also received her Education Specialist Certificate from LSU. She has worked as a school counselor at Mentorship Academy in Baton Rouge, La., before joining LSU University College in 2013.

Aslin is published in various journals, as well as has widely presented on the national, regional and state levels for numerous counseling associations. She has received many honors including LSU’s 2017 Advisor of the Year Award, the Louisiana Counseling Association Presidential Award, first place for the American Counseling Association’s Ross Trust Graduate Student Essay for Future School Counselors competition, the Lillian Oleson Scholarship and the Louisiana Counseling Association Graduate Student Volunteer Scholarship. She is a member of the National Academic Advising Association and Louisiana Counseling Association, as well as past membership in the American Counseling Association, American School Counselor Association, Louisiana School Counselor Association, and Chi Sigma Iota.

Since 1983, NACADA has honored individuals and institutions making significant contributions to the improvement of academic advising. The goal of NACADA is to promote quality academic advising and professional development of its membership to enhance the educational development of students. NACADA’s membership has grown to more than 11,000 faculty, professional advisors, administrators, counselors and others in academic and student affairs concerned with the intellectual, personal and vocational needs of students. In addition, NACADA is the representative and advocate of academic advising and those providing that service to higher education.

Since 1933, LSU University College has served as the portal of entry for students enrolled at LSU. Academic and personal success is the hallmark of a well-rounded student, and University College provides a foundation of support services for students beginning their academic careers at LSU. University College has two enrollment divisions: The Center for Freshman Year and The Center for Advising and Counseling. Additionally, University College offers retention-specific programs: Student Support Services, Ronald E. McNair Research Scholars and Summer Scholars.
