There are several options for appeal in the Accountability Process at LSU.

First, a student or Registered Student Organization (RSO) may determine that they do not accept the outcomes assigned by the Student Advocacy & Accountability (SAA) official during an administrative meeting (see section 8.0 in the Code of Student Conduct). In this instance, the student or RSO may opt to proceed with a University Hearing Panel, (UHP) who will issue an outcome.

Following a UHP, the student or RSO has the opportunity to appeal to the Dean of Students. This appeal may only be considered by the Dean on the following grounds (section 11.4 and 11.5 of the Code of Student Conduct):

  • Evidence of bias by the UHP;
  • Significant departure from the procedures, definitions or standards in the Code of Student Conduct;
  • New Information has become available since the UHP;
  • The decision or outcome is the result of a substantial disregard of the information presented to the UHP.

An appeal form must be submitted to the Dean of Students within five business days after the Student, RSO or Complainant (when permitted) is notified of the UHP Outcome or new information becomes known to the Student, RSO, or Complainant. In order to submit the appeal, click on the link included in the UHP Outcome letter and fill out the form with the information and click submit.

The form must identify the specific actions or Outcomes being contested. All submissions must include one of the aforementioned criteria as the basis for appeal. Upon receipt of the appeal, the SAA Official will submit a written position statement to the Dean of Students within five business days. The UHP outcome will remain in place for the student or RSO while the appeal is being considered.

If the Dean of Students determines that one of the above referenced grounds has been met, the following may result:

  1. UHP Outcome is upheld;
  2. Rehearing by the original UHP;
  3. Rehearing by a new UHP; or
  4. Modification of the Outcome by the Dean.

The decision on appeal is final and concludes the Accountability process. Any Outcome remaining at the conclusion of the appeal process will commence once the appeal decision is issued.
