Dr. Smith's research program aims to study all aspects of veterinary anaphylaxis with a focus on canine anaphylaxis. His research goals are to expand the knowledge of the disease processes and their effects on the body and to develop testing modalities that will allow rapid and reliable diagnosis of anaphylaxis in veterinary patients. Dr. Smith's recent work has been directed at studying hemostatic derangements associated with anaphylaxis. Additional research interests include viscoelastic coagulation testing, particularly in a point-of-care setting, and advancement of the treatment of sepsis.
Teaching interests focus on demonstrating the relationship of physiology and basic sciences to the clinical picture of patients and promoting an understanding of pattern recognition as it pertains to disease behavior.
Clinical interests include management of acute trauma, severe sepsis, and anaphylaxis as well as the diagnosis and treatment of coagulation derangements and viscoelastic coagulation evaluation.
